Amidst bells, vortices, underwater sounds and electromagnetic "sounds", Sigma is the sum of three electroacoustic works inspired by different natural phenomena and intersected by a common intention: to investigate by creating.
"Timbral studies" is an experimental piece that integrates elements of varied characteristics: bells, for their complex harmonic deployment; sirens, for their periodic glissandi; electric sounds, for their artificial nature; and underwater sounds, for their non-traditional acoustic behavior. The combination and transformation of these four classes of sounds resulted in an abstract scenario that explores a series of creative acoustic possibilities, seeking to exceed the boundaries of reality.
"Messier 101" is a sensory journey that begins at the core of a spiral galaxy and continues outward, following a direction opposite to the flow. During this transit, different temporary planes coexist simultaneously, and their elements circulate at a speed according to their "proximity to the galactic nucleus." The development of the ambiance tends to feature increasingly sparse sound combinations, finally reaching its margins in the void, the silence.
Finally, "Musica Universalis" presents an audible image of outer space based on the "sounds" from the universe (electromagnetic information from astronomical objects transformed into audio) and original musical material. Pulses, roars, white noise, and whistling whirs are some of the cosmic secret chants that, due to their non-elastic propagation in the vacuum, remain silent in real life. The piece opens with the voices of Eugene Curran and John Young during the Apollo 10 mission, saying: "you hear that? that whistling sound, 'Whoooo.' Sounds like... you know, outer-space type music."
